Michelle and I have both come to enjoy exploring (a nice word for purposely getting lost in) the forests and footpaths around Guildford. Barely 10 minute walk and the hustle of the town becomes quiet and tranquil woodland and farmland. Given the ever shorter days and impending winter weather, this time we set out not to wander aimlessly, but with a photo assignment. It was sunday, bored of work in the lab, the sun was out and it hadn’t rained over night, so, off we went. The little red dress; I had seen it before, both in Michelle’s (not so limited) […]

It was a lovely day, so Michelle and I figured we would take a nice walk the loooong way to town, through Manor Park Residence, over the A3 and through the woods 🙂 Had my NEX-7 to hand, so naturally it turned into an impromptu shoot… we grabbed some quick natural light portraits. – Text Text
Every year the society has a photo walk around Guildford in the first few weeks of the semester. This is great to get everybody talking and to learn a little about what’s around the local area. This year we had a record number of people come, i think our highest headcount on the day was 44 people! With this being england, about half way through the rain got pretty heavy, seeking cover we decided to grab lunch earlier and managed to take over a corner of wetherspoons in town (which is huge!). I spent most of time trying to teach and […]
So this is a summary of today’s lecture. Because of the room change and various technical challenges I never had time to show you the demos i wanted to which really help understand these settings. I tried battling with the union site but it doesn’t like me, so im posting here for now and will transfer it later. What is Exposure ? Essentially exposure is the image we create whilst letting light fall onto the cameras sensor. It is controlled by 3 separate camera function each of which we discuss below. The word “exposure” is quite literally referring to how […]
I feel there will always be a special place for film in the art or practice of photography. It has a palpable quality to it which, no matter how hard we try, we cannot imitate digitally. A close friend, Bill (yes, he’s a real), kindly lent me his Rolleicord (Shown Below) for my first delve into medium format photography. I wont be the first or the last to say, a camera like this really changes the way you shoot. For starters, since the view finder is on the top, you naturally shoot from lower down, more like just above waist height. Although […]
We decided ( on Takugo Miwa’s suggestion) to arrange a trip for the society to shoot in town, later at night in a group. This would be good prep for our London at Night trip which should happen shortly. It was a great opportunity to explore the difficulties of shooting at night in a familiar place. Although the weather did its best to hamper our efforts, we continued regardless 🙂 Here are some of my shots from the evening, mostly just trying things out.
Some casual snaps from our graduation day. A few more to be added shortly…
Chromatic Play is a sculptural installation at Guildford Castle created by visual artist and researcher Tine Bech and the Surrey Light Project, an interdisciplinary research project at the University of Surrey. The exhibition relates to research interests of the artist and project team, and it also represents an important collaboration between Guildford Borough Council and the University of Surrey, through the medium of public art. MILES I was contacted by artist (and researcher) Tine Bech about whether i’d be up for building and programming an interactive electronic lighting system for a lighting project in the Guildford Castle. We had worked on an light based project before where I built and programmed the electronics […]
After a little chat we had following a photo society lecture, Lisa got in touch with the idea for a Goth inspired shoot at the Guildford cathedral. With little to no time for planning, we decided to wing it early one Saturday morning.
